 MEDITERRANEAN COMBUSTION SYMPOSIUM

 Antalya, Turkey, June 20-25, 1999

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

PRESENTATION

The Mediterranean Combustion Symposium aims at the common efforts of the scientific communities from countries around the Mediterranean Sea in soliciting works and promoting the participation of scientists, engineers and students from the same area. Participants from all countries of the world are welcome and submission of papers from groups not located in this region is greatly appreciated since it is considered a valuable contribution to enrich different points of view as well as to communicate last achievements in the field. All topics and all the scientific / technological approaches in the Combustion field are pertinent to this Symposium. Topics related both to the Combustion and the Mediterranean Sea will be included in the program if they are identified by the Advisory Board, but they are not the primary objectives. The technical program will consist of oral presentation of contributed papers and work-in-progress communications. Invited lectures will be given by eminent specialists from all over the world. Contributed papers and work-in-progress communications will be organised into Colloquia on topics of special interest.

LOCATION and TRAVEL

Antalya is Turkey's principal holiday resort on the Southern Mediterranean Coast of Turkey. Set amid amazing scenery of sharp contrasts, it is an attractive city with shady, palm-lined boulevards and a prize-winning marina. It is founded in the second century BC, and continuously inhabited by the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. The population of the city is about 500 000, but more than triples in the high tourist season which is between early June to the end of September. The region sometimes called the Turkish Riviera, has pine-clad Taurus mountains sweeping down to the sparkling clear sea forming an irregular coastline of rock headlands and secluded coves. The region, bathed in sunshine for 300 days of the year, is a paradise of sun-bathing, swimming and sporting activities including mountain climbing and even skiing in the Taurus mountains during winter months.

Antalya International Airport is only 10 km away from the city with taxi service available at all hours. All major airlines have scheduled flights to Antalya from many locations in Europe. A travel agency will optionally meet all the participants at the airport and provide transportation to the city. June in Antalya is high season period with an average temperature of 30oC.

LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS

The Symposium will open with a Welcome Reception on Sunday, June 20th, and the sessions will start next morning. A travel agency will organize daily tours to several historical sites in the region such as Termessos, Olympos, Chimaira, Side, Manavgat, and Phaselis. Wednesday afternoon, June 23rd, will be a free time when a travel agency will organize a half-a-day tour to Perge and Aspendos for all the participants and accompanying persons. The symposium banquet will take place on Thursday evening, June 24th. There will be 3-day, 4-night post-conference tours to Istanbul and Cappodocia starting on June 26th, Saturday. Additional information regarding local attractions and accomodations for Symposium attendees will be available later. Requests for further information concerning the local arrangements for the Symposium should be addressed to:
